Upcycling plastic bottles to make flower pots

Upcycling plastic bottles to make flower pots

On the 18th March we organized a workshop with the aim of upcycling plastic bottles. In preparation of the workshop we discussed how most single use plastic products (as the name suggests) never get repurposed. Purchasing plastic water bottles is a common practice among people in our country which significantly contributes to the waste pile that never gets recycled. The way we decided to tackle this obstacle was to suggest to our users to use these plastic bottles and make plant pots out of them. We started the workshop by explaining to the users alternatives to plastic bottles, we suggested they invest in a sustainable long lasting water bottle which they can carry everywhere they go and can easily fill up in any park in the city. Then we proceeded to discuss how not only is this alternative better for the environment but it is also very cost effective.

After the discussion we rolled up our sleeves and started working! First, the users had the task of cutting the water bottles. They chose to make the future plant pots more interesting by cutting the plastic in wavy lines instead of just simply cutting across. After the plastic bottles were cut, the users thought about ways to decorate their plant pots. We offered many decorating materials for the users to choose from. Many of the users opted for using acrylic paint to paint the flower pots. We put on some music and started painting away! Many of the users expressed that painting is a fun activity for them, as it makes them feel relaxed and happy. When everyone finished painting their flower pot we set them out to dry. We plan on planting different types of flowers in the finished flower pots when the weather allows us to! :)
